Iowa launches new version of Electronic Game Card

The Iowa Lottery this week introduced a new "Pocket Poker" version of its Electronic Game Card (EGC) product. "Pocket Poker" is the third version of Iowa's popular game.

The new $20 game card has a guaranteed win of at least $3 with a top prize of $500.

Scientific Games Corporation markets and promotes the EGC to the global lottery market under a joint venture arrangement with Electronic Game Card, Inc..

The EGC is a pocket sized digital lottery ticket. Each card, about the size of a driver's license, is battery powered and loaded with dozens of random plays. In the case of the EGC, an electronic play replaces the traditional scratch play of a paper ticket. LCD screens on the front of the card display the symbols in a particular play and show whether it has won a prize.

Iowa was the first in the world to introduce the high-tech version of the traditional instant ticket. In October 2004, a market test of the game proved successful and in May 2005, the $20 "Quarter Play" game was introduced state wide.

And after watching its success rate, the Kansas Lottery introduced its version of the EGC called "Super 7's." After just five weeks of brisk sales, the Kansas Lottery re-ordered a full quantity of the game.

Last July, the Public Gaming Research Institute (PGRI) named the EGC as a 2005 Lottery Product of the Year during its conference in Las Vegas. The PGRI award recognizes the importance of new products to the growth and continuing success of worldwide lotteries.

"Lottery players everywhere are looking for additional entertainment value with their lottery games," said Steve Saferin, Scientific Games Properties president. "The EGC is just the kind of innovative product to offer that."
